EducOOo presents OOoLight

OOo4Kids is made for children ( 7-12 ), but after some times, it appears that older people want a light office suite too :-)

So we had the Fun idea to start from OOo4Kids 1.0, and to propose a new light office suite based on OOo4Kids.

Naturally, its name is OOoLight.

Currently, we test with Norwegian Bokmål ( Windows only ), but if the software is appreciated, maybe we'll provide other locales.

=> Download OOoLight ( Norwegian Bokmål, for Windows, only, who can be installed in parallel with OOo and OOo4Kids)

For further information, about the Norwegian version, have a look there

As usual, the <ins>Design is made by Ben Bois</ins>

Last but not least, if some feature is enough interesting, there is no problem for a backport in OpenOffice.org (OOoLight is provided under LGPL v3 License, fully compatible with OOo )

Some screenshots for the poor other :

The splashscreen :

Gullfoss: Print file format changes on Linux

The CUPS print system that is used on Linux and other Unix operating
systems is switching its file format from PostScript to PDF. As part of
this OpenOffice.org should switch its print output file format to PDF,
too. This was implemented in OOo for issue 94173.

The corresponding CWS pdfprint is going "Ready for QA" today and since
this affects an area where we should have broad testing with a variety
of systems and printers, I put an install set of the CWS at:

ftp://qa-upload.services.openoffice.org/pdfprint/linux-x86/OOo_DEV300m86_Linux_x86_install-arc_en-US.tar.gz

Please feel free to check this install set and see if it gives you
printing related trouble. Ideally this change should be transparent for
the user, that is you print your documents just as you did before. The
only visible change is that "Print to file" would now produce PDF
instead of PostScript; also you can switch the behavior back to the old
one in either the (not well known) spadmin utility or per print job: in
the Print dialog open "Properties..." , go to the "Device" TabPage and
change the "Printer Language type" to either PDF or the desired
PostScript Level.

Disclaimer: of course you should remember that this is a Child Workspace build, that is a development version. It will have the same issues that the correspoding Master Workspace (DEV300 m86) has and should not be used in a production environment.

For those that would like to test this on Solaris: here is a Solaris (x86) install set:

ftp://qa-upload.services.openoffice.org/pdfprint/solaris-x86/OOo_DEV300m86_Solaris_x86_install-arc_en-US.tar.gz

On Solaris however CUPS is rather optional, so you would not get a PDF print output there necessarily.

Martin Hollmichel: OpenOffice.org 3.3

People wondered why there is no release date defined in http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/OOoRelease33. For the past releases there was a detailed, complete release plan including date for all details in advance. That schedule is important for involved people (like l10n, qa and marketing folks) to plan their resources for the release and make the release process transparent for all.

With the current release we did not enter all concrete release details in this plan. In the past those dates were not that reliable, we missed schedules in the translation area, we missed schedules with frequent release candidates and due to miscellaneous other problems. Because of that we are now entering the date for the next upcoming milestones we know for sure but not for all dates in the future. As the release process is in general defined all participants are able to do the time estimation for their slots after the start of the release process, meaning the branch off of the code line.

Continue making the release date public although we know that there is a high probability that we miss the date is setting the wrong expectations to the public. And we continue to get reactions again like: "The OpenOffice.org release is delayed again."

The release status meeting stay responsible for the release coordination, so if there are questions or concerns please don't hesitate to show up there.

Shaun McDonald: Cycling: London to Dover overnight

With the English bank holiday weekend (Scotland has the August bank holiday on the first Monday instead of the last), I thought that I would go for one of my longer cycle rides and see if I could beat my previous record of 150 miles. On the Saturday morning I packed the 4.5 litre of water, home made pasta, chocolate and extra clothing layers into my panniers. I finally got going at 1pm, which was a lot later than I was expecting.

The first part of my journey was heading north to the River Thames on the Waterlink Way/National Cycle Route 21. Then I followed the Thames to the Woolwich ferry using the NCN4 and 1. I decided to add a little extra adventure to my journey by crossing the River Thames a couple of times. First using the Woolwich Ferry to get to the North bank, which is free. Then following a part of the new Cycle SuperHighway 3, which is a rebranding of the previous cycle path that it runs along, to head east towards my next crossing. To get back to the South bank of the Thames, I used the Dartford crossing. You can’t cycle over, however a free pickup truck service is provided to take cyclist and bike over to the other side.

After a nice chat about traffic and cycling with the traffic officer who took me across, I then re-joined the National Cycle Route 1 most of the way to Whitstable. I decided to follow a straighter new cycle route from just before Gravesend to Strood, which is part of the old A2 prior to it being upgraded.

Shortly after Sittingbourne while following the NCN1, I seen on the right hand side of the road a car with the two door windows smashed a couple of people and another vehicle, which looked rather unusual. I continued further up the road until I was out of sight, as I didn’t know how they would react and then reported the car break-in to the police via a 999 call. As I didn’t know how to describe my current location well, thus I took a photo of the screen on my phone (which ended up against my face while talking thus unable to look at the screen) with the latitude and longitude, and gave the lat/lon to the operator, which worked. On Sunday afternoon I got a phone call from the police following up with some clarifications to the useful evidence. They were pleased that I had phoned in the incident as a witness as most people would have just turned a blind eye.

A bit further down the road I stopped to eat some of my pasta, and suddenly some dark rain clouds came over and the heavens opened. Luckily it was just a fairly short shower and I had managed to find a bit of shelter for it to pass. It did worry me a bit as to how much more rain there would be for the rest of my journey. Luckily once that cloud passed it was clear for the rest of my journey.

From Whitstable I followed the coast, much of which was on the path or promenades that runs along the edge of the sea. As I was getting into Ramsgate at about 2 am after 107 miles, I was getting too tired to be able to continue the rest of the night further round the coast safely, so I found a nice bench and shelter overlooking the sea to put my head down for a few hours. Luckily I had a towel with me that I was able to use as a pillow.

Shortly after 5am I set off again slightly refreshed with the first signs of dawn. The route of the NCN1 down to Deal is quite nice. After Deal however it turns inland a little and into a very long climb that seems to just go on forever. It was nice to be able to get to the top and see the nice view across the English Channel. After a little decent there is the White Cliffs of Dover National Trust site, which has a nice view overlooking Dover ferry port. (Yeah, I’m sure you already know that I quite like travelling by ferry from time to time.)

From there I headed down the short and steep downhill into Dover, the downhill was over way too quick considering the amount of uphill. I then took the train home, going the full length of the straight track from Ashford to Redhill (with a change at Tonbridge). The reason I mention it, is because it does look quite strange or unusual at lower zooms on a map, when there generally is more curves in rail lines.

On the Sunday late afternoon/evening I took a nice 5 hour nap to catch up my sleep, before getting up for a few hours to catch up on a few things before heading back to bed for a full nights sleep.

In total it was 133 miles over 20 hours, which is my second longest cycle in one go. The Dunwich Dynamo was 127 miles including the ride to the start. At some point in the future I want to ride from Dover anti-clockwise round the coast, particularly to try hill out of Dover and the long downhill into Deal. I’d also like to do Dover-Brighton via the NCN2.

#map_1 {padding: 0; margin: 0;}#map_1 img{padding: 0; margin: 0;border:none;margin-top:0px;margin-right:0px;margin-left:0px;margin-bottom:0px;}

Eric Bachard: Improving Math Equation editor (part 1: present the problems)

<ins>

English version</ins> :

Since a long time, I appreciate the Math equation editor shipped with OpenOffice.org. It is not perfect, but I like it, even if it needs some improvements.

For the record, the most famous issue was :

equations misaligned ( see the famous 9-years-old issue 972 )

But we can easely add those one :

equation(s) size to be modified as simple highlighted text, when selected

missing symbols : bow ( little round arc over letters, to define an angle)

missing symbols : |--->

accented greek letters : counterproductive, and sometimes a bit boring

The first time I worked on that, was at the great Go-OoCon ( Prague, 2008 ), where I presented the basics of Starmath.

BTW to Novell, feel free to organize a new one ;-) .. was a great moment for people writting code, because mostly code oriented.

Since, I continued to study this part of OOo, and I even wrote a basic Starmath sources description. To avoid a company-controlled wiki, everythingis on the OOo4Kids wiki (feel free to complete if you see missing / errors .. ).

The idea, was to help students interested to contribute, and share the knowledge.

And the good thing is, that Go-Oo was selected as project for the Google Summer of code. I was proud to see Novell people welcome me in its GSoc Team, and at the end, we (my friend Fridrich*** and me) were lucky to obtain 2 students working on the Math improvment !!

In the next part, I'll present all the actors who participated, and how we worked.

***Congratulations for the recent happy event :)

symbole manquant : |--->

""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""
Education Project on the wiki
EducOO.org blog (french)
OOo4Kids

Up early, packed everything into the car, roof-box, etc.
Off to see Sandra's to swim in the pool again - M. finally shed her
fear of the water and started swimming lengths at crazy speed in
	her swimming ring, good.

Picked some apples, had lunch, bid 'bye to the parents &
thanks for their help, and set off to drive home. Three and a bit
hours later (a very clear drive) arrived.

Unpacked variously, fed the babes, read them stories. Started
on the inbox, oh dear ... perhaps a mistake; but it's a bank holiday
	on Monday too it seems.

 Interested to read that Wheat
	has been tentatively sequenced:

The wheat genome is the largest genome decoded to date.
It is five times larger than the human genome and is known to be a
very complex structure, comprised of three independent genomes.(BBC)

Interesting - if you were astounded by having an ~identical genome to
a chimpanzee, perhaps it is time to get a bigger-is-better inferiority
complex going with your breakfast cereal; alternatively - time to start
	collecting base-pairs (or chromosomes ?).

 Everyone off to Fountains
Abbey to admire the ancient ruins of the monastary there. Some spectacular
construction and architecture by the Cistercians - apparently
they started their first monestary in a swamp - on purpose to make it harder
to live there: which as a side-effect made them experts in water management.
Lots of wandering in the sun with the babes, admiring the mill's water works,
	and so on.

Read the amusing literature, on eg. lead
water pipes, something approximately like this:
"The Monks used lead pipes for their water, but
nationally we replaced our lead water piping forty years ago. There are three
problems with lead piping - first, hair loss (not such a big issue for Monks),
second - loss of short term memory, and third - I can't remember."

Home in the evening, ice creams from England's (nominally) oldest
sweet shop. Watched Howel's Moving Castle with the
babes, fed them dinner, and left the parents to baby-sit them.

Out for dinner with my wife - bliss. Swift pint beforehand, then
really an extraordiarily good restaurant The Willow
at Pateley Bridge - amazed to find such unusually good food. Back, bed
	late.

Off to find a suitable river to muck about in with
the babes - to attempt to teach them what rivers are for -
and to expunge the Townie "ooh my dress might get muddy"

Much fun paddling and slipping about in a river,
seemingly near an old Roman road. Suitable dam building
exploits - fitting considering the rocky terrain. Training
in the ubiquity of sheep, rabbit etc. droppings and the
necessity of treading on them if you are to make any
	progress. Much successful de-townification.

On to an abandoned lime kiln on the moors, and
climbed up to an observation point over a huge limestone
quarry - completely invisible from the road / nearby - with
grass banks concealing and muting a vast pit packed with
interesting looking machines. The girls took a great interest
in the various mechanical monsters and their roles, but were
disapointed by a lack of blasting.

On into Grassington and through to find a pleasant
	spot near the river to have a picnic lunch;

Home, to watch Jurrasic Park together; hmm. Then
dinner and packed everyone off to bed.

Amazed to see the British media reporting news like
	this

Doctors with religious beliefs are less likely
to take decisions which could hasten the death of those who
are terminally ill, a study suggests
. Odd
that the converse is not the news: Doctors with no religious
beliefs are more likely to take decisions which could hasten
death ... etc. I hope my doctor has a high commitment to
	(at least my) life.

Up early, booked an appointment for J. with the local GP,
mercifully 20 metres from the house. Off to visit
	The Forbidden
	Corner
apparently (The strangest place in the world) - discovered on
arriving that it doesn't open until nearly midday (oh). Spent some
time wandering the pleasant grounds, getting mobbed by hungyr ducks,
and admiring a flock of swifts flying fast and close between us as
we walked to catch some sort of insect near the ground.

A snatch of lunch, and we set off to sample the strange-ness.
And indeed, as advertised, it was really extremely unusual. a set of
fine gardens, with an over-arching maze - some extraordinary follies,
a labryinth of underground tunnels of unusual complexity, castle
pieces, grotesque statues, and lots of IR controlled water sprays -
everything a child could want, and more. Strangely E. was terrified
by the relatively mild burping entrance gate, and not by some of the
very tight underground spaces. M. sat out a lot of dark, underground
	twistiness with Grandma.

Eventually back home, rather late. Fish and Chips dinner,
put the babes to bed, and chatted with the parents. Bed earlyish.

I wanted to write some blog post, but I still couldn’t find time for it… but I have something cooking here that is worth talking about. I have started to write a small command line tool showing the internals of .doc files. Thanks to apache POI and the file format specs, it currently outputs quite nicely the paragraphs and their runs as well as the field descriptors. This helps me a lot to understand what is going on in the OpenOffice.org WW8 import filter, but is currently not complete.

The sources are available under GPL v3 on this gitorious repository: http://gitorious.org/ww8dumper/ww8dumper, feel free to propose some patches to make is progress!

Mail, news, Clarity, fluff. Lunch with Jill. Filed
misc bugs with traces. Chased an Evo. bug for a while, some
odd combination of threading, gdbus, glib signals taking a
gstrv, and some unpleasant memory corruption.

Boggled at Intel buying McAffe - what a strange
acquisition, attempted somehow to detect an underlying
strategy ... there is clearly a missing piece somewhere.

 Enjoyed Richard Fontana's
	Copyright Assignment slides

Formal contribution agreements are Bad:

No real legal advantages

Signals basic lack of legal confidence in FOSS

Negates social/technical advantages of FOSS

Ethical concerns

More justifiable if assignee is nonprofit fiduciary

Otherwise, best policies are informal, pure FOSS, documented

Dinner early, conference call late; awaited Tom & Becky
who clearly were enjoying themselves too much in Cambridge.
