The Sun Wiki Publisher enables you to create Wiki articles on MediaWiki servers without having to know the syntax of the MediaWiki markup language. Publish your new and existing documents transparently with the Writer to a wiki page.

All important text attributes such as headings, hyperlinks, lists and simple tables are supported. Even images are supported as long as they have already been uploaded to the wiki site. An automatic upload of images is currently not supported.

It is the perfect extension for all users who want to make existing documentations and specifications available on MediaWiki servers. Just load the document and call the Extension with 'Send – MediaWiki Server'. A dialog will guide you to publish your document.

The former problem is identified and solved; It was all about a focus problem:
The UI of OpenOffice.org is not completely updated when the application is not front most.

When VCL TestTool starts OpenOffice.org, the application is started behind
the VCL TestTool application. This prevents some UI updates on OpenOffice.org,
which would be necessary for some tests.
First solution, as a workaround, is calling OpenOffice.org.app with the shell command,
after the VCL TestTool started soffice.bin. This makes OOo the front most application.

The real solution is made by PL, binding some 'bring application to front' action
to the commandline switch '-enableautomation', which belongs to CWS aquavcl07.

So from now on, errors shown by automated testing on MacOS X, are real errors found in OpenOffice.org.

I just had the chance to play with Caolan’s cool callcatcher program to search and destroy (or comment out rather) lots of unused methods in Calc’s code. It was surprisingly simple to install and use it. All I had to do after downloading the source package was to

tar xvf callcatcher-1.0.8.tar.gz
cd callcatcher-1.0.8
sudo ./setup.py install

then replace all gcc and g++ calls with callcatcher gcc and callcatcher g++, respectively, to catch all defined functions and their references (or lack thereof). That’s all. Once done, run callanalyse [executable or shared library] to generate the summary output of all unused methods. It was pretty accurate, and as he claims there was no false positives as far as I could tell.

"Just a few words here... The Openoffice Aqua is still only an alpha version, - not even a beta.:-)

but when this said, I can only say that the last build of OpenOffice 3.0 Aqua is running very, very stable on both OS X 10.4.11PPC/10.5.2PPC as well as on a MacPro with both 10.4.11 and 10.5.2.

It is more that three times as fast as NeoOffice and more than twice as fast than both MSOffice 2004 and 2008! - And until now i haven't had a single 'unexpected quit' with the last two builds of OOo3.0. - Also the fonts handling is quite a lot better than in NeoOffice and MSO2004/2008. - I have apprx. 1550 fonts active in my main set, and apprx. 23.000 fonts on the HD - all 100% managed by Linotype Fontexplorer.

So now printing with quite a lot of various fonts and various typefaces within the same font is just like a dream, though the OOo crew still tells us that printing can be a problem.:-)

So what can't we expect, when first OpenOffice 3.0 Final is released? - Mmmmm.... I can hardly wait.:-)"

I just came across the following OpenOffice.org 3.0 Beta feedback:

"I've been using the beta version of Open Office 3 for a week now and am quite impressed. It is a Mac-native build that doesn't require X11. It seems quite stable and noticeably faster than NeoOffice and Office 2008. There's no Entourage equivalent but an interesting database component. The spreadsheet and presentation components seem more or less equivalent to Office. And OO does have a pretty robust macro system built in.

The database component isn't really a complete db in and of itself, rather a front end that connects to database servers like MySQL. As such it requires a bit more technical savvy than the average user is likely to have, but opens interesting possibilities for custom database management.

Import and export of OO and Office files is very good. I'm worked with some heavily formatted Word files and a reasonably complex Excel spreadsheet. OO maintained the formatting and formulas better than iWork 08.

OO has a seemingly deep built in help system that provides on-hover pop up boxes that explain extra functionality.

As an open source project the fit and finish are not up to Microsoft standards let alone Apple's, but OO is not butt ugly either.

My biggest quibble is that scrolling with a scroll wheel is slow, even on 5 page Writer documents. Also the conversion between Windows/Linux conventions isn't complete. When mousing over an embedded hyperlink, OO instructed me to "Ctrl-click" on the link to open it in my browser. Oops. With a Mac that's Cmd (command)-click. (I did submit a bug ticket)

Still, I'm very impressed with the first public release beta of OO for OS X. It is both faster and more stable than the Office 08 demo I tried out. Since I'm not working in a corporate setting and don't need absolute compatibility with Microsoft, I see no reason to purchase Office 2008 for an Intel native office suite. The presentation module isn't near as slick as Keynote but the word processing and spreadsheets are more capable than Pages and Numbers. If you need that extra functionality then give OO a try."

Some time ago, I've discovered an Eclipse project which sounds interesting to me. This project aims at providing an AJAX runtime target for Eclipse RCP applications. I didn't have more time but to play a little with the public demos. Thus I still wondered what is the gap for an Eclipse RCP applications developper before starting to create a RAP application.

Today I had some time to have a look at the sources of a RAP application project. There is quite nothing more to do if you are already programming Eclipse RCP applications as the differences are :

Adding the org.eclipse.rap.ui plugin to the dependencies.
Importing the javax.servlet and javax.servlet.http packages
Add an org.eclipse.rap.ui.entrypoint extension to define the RAP application entry point

To internationalization of a RAP application works also differently from the standard Eclipse internationalization. This is described in the RAP on-line help : internationalizing a RAP application shouldn't be a huge problem.

A RAP application can even be packaged in a WAR file as any other web application. There is no wizard to perform this, but a sample Eclipse feature projects with Ant build scripts are available on the Eclipse CVS. There is also generic Equinox documentation on that topic at http ://www.eclipse.org/equinox/server/http_in_container.php.

Thus creating a standard Web application by using the JFace and SWT APIs is quite easy. When combined with Spring-OSGi, let us imagine creating powerful and sexy Web applications.

The only thing I still would like to see before being a RAP fan is a benchmark of an application used by hundreds or thousands of users. Does it make a difference with toolkits like GWT or YUI ? Can I use RAP for business applications used every day by a whole company ?

Gullfoss: Announcing “Quality Assurance Statuspage” aka “QUASTe”

It is done and the first public beta of QUASTe has been released and is now available for all interested in quality-status of OpenOffice.org Builds.

It has been found out it was too optimistic to launch it in February as announced in my previous blog. There was still a lot of work to do to get this done. Gerd Weiss from Local IT and Bernd Eilers from Tooling gave big support to help bringing the server finally to work and here we are :-)

Erwin Tenhumberg: OpenSolaris running on popular Eee PC

Very cool! I just found out that OpenSolaris can be installed on the popular Asus Eee PC. Yesterday at the local book store I also noticed the first books about the Eee PC showing up on the shelves. During my recent trip to the US, I noticed the Eee PC everywhere, at JavaOne, at Starbucks, etc. For example, I asked the guy at Starbucks how happy he was with the pre-installed OpenOffice.org. He told me that he is extremely happy and that he is recommending OpenOffice.org to all his friends. He also recommends OpenOffice.org to all his evening class students. Thus, it's nice to see the Eee PC have such a positive impact on OpenOffice.org's market share.

Gullfoss: System Integration for OOo 3.0 Beta for Windows

If you test the OpenOffice.org 3.0 Beta on the Windows platform, you might be wondered about the missing system integration. Well, we decided to avoid the system integration in the Windows registry, because it conflicts with an existing system integration of an OOo 2.x, that you are probably using for your daily work. But if you know, what you do, you can of course get the complete system integration for your Beta tests. You only have to set the global property WRITE_REGISTRY, that is used as condition in the Windows Installer database. So please use

setup.exe WRITE_REGISTRY=1

or if you prefer the direct call with Windows Installer service:

msiexec.exe /i <msi_database> WRITE_REGISTRY=1

If you want to work with your OOo 2.x after you have tested the OOo 3.0 Beta and want to get the system integration for the OOo 2.x back again, you can achieve this by starting a "Repair" for the OOo 2.x that is available in the Control Panel in the Add/Remove software applet.

Recently, I wanted to build OOo with some features like canvas support. As I had some errors when building the canvas module, ericb2 told me that I should get the canvas05 CWS¹ and build OpenOffice.org with it. As I didn't know how to do it, Eric explained it on #education.openoffice.org channel. Here is a condensed version of what Eric explained on IRC for people who'ld like to check out a CWS.

Getting informations on the CWS

The first thing to do is to get some informations about the desired CWS. For this, search the wanted CWS in EIS. A search by the CWS name will do the trick here as we know it : canvas05. Click on the CWS name in the search results and then on the All link to see all the CWS informations.

In our case, the useful informations are :

the current milestone, which is the milestone against which to build the CWS. Here the milestone for canvas05 is m9
the list of the CVS modules changed by the CWS. Here these are : basecmp, basegfx, canvas, comphelper, cppcanvas, goodies, offapi, officecfg, offuh, scp2, sd, sdext, slideshow, scx, testshl2, tools, unoil, vcl
the MWS² of the CWS' creation. Here it's SRC680

Getting the sources

First, be sure to have the sources of the correct OpenOffice.org milestone. If not, check them out using the following command. For more informations on how to access the OpenOffice.org CVS, read this page. In this command, DEV300 is the MWS and m9 the milestone of the desired version. Before executing this command, be sure to have set the CVSROOT environment variable.

Now that the OpenOffice.org sources are checked out, it's time to check out the sources of the CWS. To do this, use a shell command (Windows users, can use it with Cygwin or can translate it) like the following. In this command :

Gullfoss: Updating XSLT based filters – enhancing XHTML export

Svante Schubert (Co-lead XML project) has finished an update for the XHTML export filter. It was the 14^th of April where the CWS arrived ready for QA-status. In the meanwhile Svante and Mathias Bauer also have discussed about updating the XSLT based filters via an extension [issue 88270] to be independent from update cycles of the whole office application. So the iTeam decided to expand the scope of the CWS DEV300/xsltfilter09 and I am really happy that we have done that.

One week later – 21^st of April – the CWS was again ready for QA and with the integration of the CWS xsltfilter09 to the DEV300 master workspace the OpenOffice.org will get some really great enhancements for the XHTML export and also the other XSLT based filters (e.g. DocBook XML):

change of the default extension for the XHTML export from .xhtml to .html

with that change the Internet Explorer is able to load the exported XHTML documents of OOo [issue 85268]

Footnotes are now supported also in XHTML export [issue 34424]
Field values are now supported in XHTML export [issue 75125]
Export of headings greater six now according to XHTML specification [issue 80679]

The three terms summarize in a very short manner what the User
Experience Team's overall goals are. The list below describes the
meaning a little bit more in detail:

Usability:
This term explains the ease with which people can work with
OpenOffice.org to archive their goal in a particular context in an
effective and efficient manner. Sadly, this term is usually meant to
describe the “user friendliness” in the field of computer-human
interaction.

Productivity:
This term accompanies “usability” because of the general
misunderstanding of meaning “user friendliness” only. Again, it
emphasizes that working with OpenOffice.org should raise the
“productivity” significantly.

Enjoyment:
Working with OpenOffice.org should be pleasant. This is important, if
OpenOffice.org wants to attract new users and keep the experienced ones.
Currently, OpenOffice.org loses many potential users who dislike the
overall behavior/look of OpenOffice.org. But there is also a serious
fact: people which are happy with a product tend to be more creative in
their solution findings.

Writer's Tools is a set of utilities designed to help OpenOffice.org users perform a wide range of tasks. Using Writer's Tools, you can back up documents, look up and translate words and phrases, manage text snippets, and keep tabs on document statistics. Writer's Tools includes the following utilities:

Lookup Tool allows you to look up the currently selected word in several online references, including Cambridge Dictionaries, WordNet, and Google Define.
Google Translate allows users to quickly translate selected text fragments between different languages using the Google Translate service.
Show on the Map allows you to select a city, a street name, or a post code and map it using Google Maps.
Email Backup can be used to quickly send a backup copy of the currently opened document to a specified email address.
Multi-format Backup macro saves the currently opened Writer document in the Word, RTF, and TXT formats. The backup files are stored in a separate folder with a date stamp. On Linux, the macro also archives the resulting folder using the tar utility. On Windows, there is an option to use the 7-zip compression tool.
Remote Backup allows you to quickly save a backup copy of the current document on an FTP server.
Wikify Word tool links a selected word or text fragment in the current document to a Writer document, which is created on the fly. For example, if the word “Monkey” is selected, the macro automatically links it to the created on the fly Monkey.odt document.
Start/Stop Timer tool can be used to keep tabs on the time spent on the currently opened document and save the time data (the document name, used time, and date) in the accompanying WriterDB database.
Word Hunt Game is a simple game, where you have to guess the word randomly picked by Writer.
Q and A Game is a no-frills quiz game, which can help you to test you knowledge and memorize stuff.
Letter Hunt Game is a game, where you have to guess a randomly picked word letter-by-letter.
Word of the Day tool picks and displays a random word and its definition from the accompanying WriterDB database. As a writer, you may often come across a new word or an interesting expression. The WriterDB database allows you to store your language findings in one place, while the Word of the Day tool helps you to keep them active in your memory.
Add to Basket tool is designed to quickly add text snippets, links, and notes to the supplied database.
Database tool opens the WriterDB database, where you can use the available forms to manage notes and tasks.
Convert To tool can convert Writer documents in a selected folder into a specified format. These tools can come in handy when you need to convert multiple Writer documents in one go.
App Launcher is a customizable application launcher, which you can use to add and launch often-used applications directly from withing OpenOffice.org.
Tasks tool is a no-frills to-do manager that allows you to quickly add, view, and purge tasks.
Writer Templates is a separate extension that contains an article and a book template.
miniInvoices is a customizable invoicing solution for writers. miniInvoices is built with OpenOffice.org Base and relies on the Sun Report Builder extension. The solution features support for multiple currencies and basic reporting capabilities. The latter allows the user to generate print-ready invoices and earning reports. miniInvoices is available as a separate download.

I’ve just finished designing a new dialog for Calc’s sheet protection functionality to allow optional sheet protection options. This was actually my first time designing a dialog from scratch instead of modifying an existing one, so I had to dig around and figure out how to add a dialog. It turns out that it is actually very simple once you know what to do. After several hours of creative designing process, I’ve come up with something I can show to people. So here it is:

One thing to note: obviously this dialog is inspired by the similar functionality offered by Excel, and Excel provides many more options for sheet protection than just the two I’m showing here. The reason I only have two at the moment is because I’ve only implemented support for those two options in Calc core. When we support more options in the core, we can easily add them to the dialog.

This work is on-going in scsheetprotection02 CWS. Aside from the new dialog and sheet protection options, this CWS contains my other work on the binary Excel export encryption as well as sheet and document password interoperability between Excel and Calc. I’m trying to wrap this up, so hopefully I can come up with something that people can try out soon.

Awoke in the morning, to discover a crushed mouse in the "better mousetrap", the part-time vegan (have to one-up Miguel) in me not inconsiderably upset by this; binned it.
To work, phone call with Noel - who has isolated a most interesting 64bit compiler bug afflicting the OO.o test-tool: nice. Dug at mail. Filed bugs, played with Soeren's display properties capplet, and was unfeasibly pleased to see it working so nicely.
Amused by Philip's extraordinary analysis of BS 1363 as Wikipedia says This plug is often described as the safest in the world. What is meant by this concern for static electricity is quite unclear to me; by design (as is common), the earth pin is connected before the live & neutral pins are so the device casing is earthed: ie. it should not be possible to have a device (even with a live -> earth fault) whose casing is live & un-earthed. Consequently - you can touch the earth pin as much as you like (or drop tin foil on it or whatever) and if you get a static shock - this is because you have a nylon carpet you were just shuffling about on: you would get the same effect from the tap, a lamp-post, or well anything good earth.
Call with Florian, lunch with Lydia. Booted the Gnome Live-CD on x86_64 - looks beautiful, configured my awkward monitor correctly too: nice. Did the install with yast-ncurses to avoid the now fixed yast2-gtk live installer bug.
Chased nasty nautilus bug a bit; played with the babes; conference call with Greg & crew on the OSRB - interesting. Installed all the good stuff onto the x86_64 live CD install system: the joy of zypper etc.

I just found about this offer in Germany. A vendor called "one" is selling a low-cost laptop with Linux and OpenOffice.org pre-installed for 199 Euro. This special offer lasts until May 12th according to the website. Cool to see more and more hardware vendors bundle OpenOffice.org!
