Polish Dictionary Pack for OpenOffice 3.0. Contains Polish spellchecker, hyphenation rules & thesaurus, as prepared by Polish Native-Lang Project. The spellchecker is based on Polish dictionary from sjp.pl, the thesaurus comes from synonimy.ux.pl, and the hyphenation rules are based on TeX hyphenation patterns. All are available under LGPL or public domain (hyphenation rules).

Gullfoss: Updating XSLT based filters – enhancing XHTML export

Svante Schubert (Co-lead XML project) has finished an update for the XHTML export filter. It was the 14^th of April where the CWS arrived ready for QA-status. In the meanwhile Svante and Mathias Bauer also have discussed about updating the XSLT based filters via an extension [issue 88270] to be independent from update cycles of the whole office application. So the iTeam decided to expand the scope of the CWS DEV300/xsltfilter09 and I am really happy that we have done that.

One week later – 21^st of April – the CWS was again ready for QA and with the integration of the CWS xsltfilter09 to the DEV300 master workspace the OpenOffice.org will get some really great enhancements for the XHTML export and also the other XSLT based filters (e.g. DocBook XML):

change of the default extension for the XHTML export from .xhtml to .html

with that change the Internet Explorer is able to load the exported XHTML documents of OOo [issue 85268]

Footnotes are now supported also in XHTML export [issue 34424]
Field values are now supported in XHTML export [issue 75125]
Export of headings greater six now according to XHTML specification [issue 80679]

The Sun Wiki Publisher enables you to create Wiki articles on MediaWiki servers without having to know the syntax of the MediaWiki markup language. Publish your new and existing documents transparently with the Writer to a wiki page.

All important text attributes such as headings, hyperlinks, lists and simple tables are supported. Even images are supported as long as they have already been uploaded to the wiki site. An automatic upload of images is currently not supported.

It is the perfect extension for all users who want to make existing documentations and specifications available on MediaWiki servers. Just load the document and call the Extension with 'Send – MediaWiki Server'. A dialog will guide you to publish your document.

Requires StarOffice 8 (Update 10 or higher) or OpenOffice.org (2.4 or higher)

I'm happy to announce the new logo of the User Experience Team.
The main goal of the logo is to penetrate core values of the project:

Usability,
Productivity,
Enjoyment

The three terms summarize in a very short manner what the User
Experience Team's overall goals are. The list below describes the
meaning a little bit more in detail:

Usability:
This term explains the ease with which people can work with
OpenOffice.org to archive their goal in a particular context in an
effective and efficient manner. Sadly, this term is usually meant to
describe the “user friendliness” in the field of computer-human
interaction.

Productivity:
This term accompanies “usability” because of the general
misunderstanding of meaning “user friendliness” only. Again, it
emphasizes that working with OpenOffice.org should raise the
“productivity” significantly.

Enjoyment:
Working with OpenOffice.org should be pleasant. This is important, if
OpenOffice.org wants to attract new users and keep the experienced ones.
Currently, OpenOffice.org loses many potential users who dislike the
overall behavior/look of OpenOffice.org. But there is also a serious
fact: people which are happy with a product tend to be more creative in
their solution findings.

The logo is the first step to improve the external communication of the

Writer's Tools is a set of utilities designed to help OpenOffice.org users perform a wide range of tasks. Using Writer's Tools, you can back up documents, look up and translate words and phrases, manage text snippets, and keep tabs on document statistics. Writer's Tools includes the following utilities:

Lookup Tool allows you to look up the currently selected word in several online references, including Cambridge Dictionaries, WordNet, and Google Define.
Google Translate allows users to quickly translate selected text fragments between different languages using the Google Translate service.
Show on the Map allows you to select a city, a street name, or a post code and map it using Google Maps.
Email Backup can be used to quickly send a backup copy of the currently opened document to a specified email address.
Multi-format Backup macro saves the currently opened Writer document in the Word, RTF, and TXT formats. The backup files are stored in a separate folder with a date stamp. On Linux, the macro also archives the resulting folder using the tar utility. On Windows, there is an option to use the 7-zip compression tool.
Remote Backup allows you to quickly save a backup copy of the current document on an FTP server.
Wikify Word tool links a selected word or text fragment in the current document to a Writer document, which is created on the fly. For example, if the word “Monkey” is selected, the macro automatically links it to the created on the fly Monkey.odt document.
Start/Stop Timer tool can be used to keep tabs on the time spent on the currently opened document and save the time data (the document name, used time, and date) in the accompanying WriterDB database.
Word Hunt Game is a simple game, where you have to guess the word randomly picked by Writer.
Q and A Game is a no-frills quiz game, which can help you to test you knowledge and memorize stuff.
Letter Hunt Game is a game, where you have to guess a randomly picked word letter-by-letter.
Word of the Day tool picks and displays a random word and its definition from the accompanying WriterDB database. As a writer, you may often come across a new word or an interesting expression. The WriterDB database allows you to store your language findings in one place, while the Word of the Day tool helps you to keep them active in your memory.
Add to Basket tool is designed to quickly add text snippets, links, and notes to the supplied database.
Database tool opens the WriterDB database, where you can use the available forms to manage notes and tasks.
Convert To tool can convert Writer documents in a selected folder into a specified format. These tools can come in handy when you need to convert multiple Writer documents in one go.
App Launcher is a customizable application launcher, which you can use to add and launch often-used applications directly from withing OpenOffice.org.
Tasks tool is a no-frills to-do manager that allows you to quickly add, view, and purge tasks.
Writer Templates is a separate extension that contains an article and a book template.
miniInvoices is a customizable invoicing solution for writers. miniInvoices is built with OpenOffice.org Base and relies on the Sun Report Builder extension. The solution features support for multiple currencies and basic reporting capabilities. The latter allows the user to generate print-ready invoices and earning reports. miniInvoices is available as a separate download.

I’ve just finished designing a new dialog for Calc’s sheet protection functionality to allow optional sheet protection options. This was actually my first time designing a dialog from scratch instead of modifying an existing one, so I had to dig around and figure out how to add a dialog. It turns out that it is actually very simple once you know what to do. After several hours of creative designing process, I’ve come up with something I can show to people. So here it is:

One thing to note: obviously this dialog is inspired by the similar functionality offered by Excel, and Excel provides many more options for sheet protection than just the two I’m showing here. The reason I only have two at the moment is because I’ve only implemented support for those two options in Calc core. When we support more options in the core, we can easily add them to the dialog.

This work is on-going in scsheetprotection02 CWS. Aside from the new dialog and sheet protection options, this CWS contains my other work on the binary Excel export encryption as well as sheet and document password interoperability between Excel and Calc. I’m trying to wrap this up, so hopefully I can come up with something that people can try out soon.

Awoke in the morning, to discover a crushed mouse in the "better mousetrap", the part-time vegan (have to one-up Miguel) in me not inconsiderably upset by this; binned it.
To work, phone call with Noel - who has isolated a most interesting 64bit compiler bug afflicting the OO.o test-tool: nice. Dug at mail. Filed bugs, played with Soeren's display properties capplet, and was unfeasibly pleased to see it working so nicely.
Amused by Philip's extraordinary analysis of BS 1363 as Wikipedia says This plug is often described as the safest in the world. What is meant by this concern for static electricity is quite unclear to me; by design (as is common), the earth pin is connected before the live & neutral pins are so the device casing is earthed: ie. it should not be possible to have a device (even with a live -> earth fault) whose casing is live & un-earthed. Consequently - you can touch the earth pin as much as you like (or drop tin foil on it or whatever) and if you get a static shock - this is because you have a nylon carpet you were just shuffling about on: you would get the same effect from the tap, a lamp-post, or well anything good earth.
Call with Florian, lunch with Lydia. Booted the Gnome Live-CD on x86_64 - looks beautiful, configured my awkward monitor correctly too: nice. Did the install with yast-ncurses to avoid the now fixed yast2-gtk live installer bug.
Chased nasty nautilus bug a bit; played with the babes; conference call with Greg & crew on the OSRB - interesting. Installed all the good stuff onto the x86_64 live CD install system: the joy of zypper etc.

ODFDOM is the new opensource (LGPLv3), multi-layered, lightweight, OpenDocument centric API with a Java 5 reference implementation.

For a quick review we offer you an online JavaDoc documentation and the wiki. For deeper analysis we have uploaded several packages:

The zipped JavaDoc API
The JAR of the reference Java 5 implementation
The zipped NetBeans package containing the sources of ODFDOM v0.6.

The version number 0.6 was chosen as we believe that although there is still some work towards a full version, already more than half of the way towards it was managed.

Even with its 0.6 version, ODFDOM is more than a successful prototype, which tests new concepts like the typed DOM code generation from the RelaxNG schema of OpenDocument 1.1. Moreover it is the living successor of AODL and Odf4j, co-evolved from their creators and already matured by countless development cycles within more than a year development within Sun.

Therefore there is nothing left for me to say, as that I hope you will join us in evolving the API to a full version!

Enlightening call about artwork with Jakub and Garret, fixed nasty yast2 gtk bug killing popups from the second stage of the installer.
Cell group in the evening; back late. Lay in bed, admiring the wife, the ceiling, trying to sleep & that sort of thing Is that scratching noise you !? - discovered a mouse under the chaise-longue: cue sudden wifely exit & a most interesting bonding exercise: man with mouse - involving the ineffective persuit around the room of a tiny, fast (and remarkably sweet) little creature by a large, slow & clumsy me. Piled furniture on the bed to get a better view: confounded by it hiding under the edge of the carpet. Eventually lost it under the door into the rest of the house. Set traps, back to bed. It's comforting that it really preferred to scurry across the floor - perhaps the stereotypical women have the right idea standing on chairs to avoid them.

Source Code fragments in C++, Java, or StarBasic can be color coded for a better appearance. StarBasic is formatted to like like the OOo IDE. Java colors mimic those in Eclipse.

A block of code is assumed to be formatted based on the following paragraph styles: _OOoComputerCode, _OOoComputerCodeLastLine, _code, _code_first_line, _code_last_line, or _code_one_line.

In case you did not notice, a new version of VirtualBox just came out. I use VirtualBox on my MacBook to also run Windows, Linux and OpenSolaris, so that I can easily take screenshots on other platforms or test software on other platforms. For example users might want to test the new OpenSolaris using VirtualBox. VitualBox definitely has made my life much easier!

"Of course, I do not want to suggest that MySQL "...is a Desktop Database", because it's not. Rather, MySQL is a general-purpose database, so there's no reason at all to dismiss it for typical "Desktop Database" purposes.

Even though MySQL is a server product, MySQL resembles a typical Desktop Database in a number of ways. For example, MySQL is not extravagantly resource-hungry, and does not require much maintenance - (not for this purpose anyway). So, there's not much against using MySQL here.

In fact, it's probably a good idea to back your Desktop Database applications with MySQL. A lot of the typical problems (resource contention due to locking, file corruption due to crashing application programs, scale limits, and much much more) that you encounter as these applications grow larger, are either not-existent or easily solved using a server solution such as MySQL.

So - let's dive in, and see what it takes to use MySQL in the daily office. Oh yeah - I once did a write-up on connecting MS Access and MySQL. This time, we won't be using MS Office at all. We'll use OpenOffice.org instead."

Up early, poked mail, chat with JP. Reflected on my love for nice lab manuals to write notes in during the day: I think the answer is laptop computers., most amusing.
Tried to re-build lzma-alpha-devel and deltarpm on my old server system to make an applydeltaiso that can operate on the new openSUSE ISOs: failed, bother. Time to upgrade that system to an upgradeable system.
Installed OS11.0 Beta2 on more hardware, filed more bugs - but looking rather good. Lunch. Spent a good while chasing a most irritating keyboard / keymap issue. Then another set of curious nasties around a strange gdm / gconf interaction, and more bugs - new betas are exciting.
H. discovered a Bratz bag in a pile of second-hand (mostly) good-things we were passing on; bother - she appears insanely pleased with this grey bag with the apparently ugly & unpleasant girls tacked onto it.

This extension will add a new item to the File - Templates menu that allows to assign a new template to the current document. All styles and formatting will be loaded from that template and the document will behave as it was created using that template.

New menu is File - Templates - Assign new...

As merging menu items is supported for OOo 2.3 and higher only, there will be a toolbar button to assign a new template.

This behaviour has been requested in Issue 52783.

The extension itself is localized to Danish, Dutch, English, German, Italian, Russian and Spanish. If there is need for further translations, please send me an email (you should be able to translate about 10 strings to the desired language).

Compose Special Characters lets you type two or three characters and then run a macro to convert them into a single accented or special character. Writer and Calc are currently supported.

You can also use a dialog to insert any supported character. The dialog lists all supported characters and the character combinations you use to compose them - once you know the character combination you need for any particular character you don't need to use the dialog. The characters are categorised in the dialog for easier reference.

To open the dialog choose Compose Character... on the Insert menu (Insert > Compose Character...).

You can assign the macro to Alt+Shift+Z using a button on the dialog, or you can manually assign it to whatever key combo you choose via Tools > Customise... > Keyboard.

HOW TO USE

For Text documents:: Type the two composing characters and run the ComposeSpecialChar macro.
For Spreadsheet documents:: Type "¬" plus the two composing characters, then run the ComposeSpecialChar macro. A flag character is required in Calc because currently there doesn't seem to be any way to identify in code where the insertion point is in an OpenOffice spreadsheet cell. Since you might want to insert a special character anywhere in a cell, not just as the last character, the flag character is necessary.

After installing the extension you'll need to close OpenOffice then re-open it to see the new Compose Characters... menu item on the Insert menu.

As many of the readers may wonder what is the uno-skeletonmaker, I will start with a short explanation of its use. The uno-skeletonmaker is a command line tool provided in the OpenOffice.org SDK which generates a skeleton of code for the implementation of an UNO IDL service specification. This tool can generate either C++ or Java. The uno-skeletonmaker is mainly used in the Eclipse and NetBeans integrations for OpenOffice.org.

Why do I would like to improve the uno-skeletonmaker ?

In fact the code generated by this tool is not really acceptable for a OpenOffice.org extensions beginner developer. For example, the methods generated for an interface attributes in Java simply does nothing and there is no TODO comment to inform the developer that something has to be written there. What could be great has been started in the C++ code generation : these methods have a default body using a private member. The problem with the C++ generated code is that the member is not defined.

By talking with Noel Power at the Go-OOCon in Prague, we found interesting to improve (may be redevelop) the uno-skeletonmaker for it to be able to manage code style definitions. The need is that every coder or enterprise has its own code style and would like to have it applied by the uno-skeletonmaker. An other interesting point of making the uno-skeletonmaker templateable would be to have to ability to add new languages more easily (e.g. Python).

I've started hacking the uno-skeletonmaker to fix the attributes methods generation problems and I will certainly add the support of singletons code generation. However, I won't make the uno-skeletonmaker templateable during the nights because its quite a long job. If anyone wants to do it, feel free to propose yourself on the dev AT api mailing list : its a quite small piece of code with really few dependencies.

I'm back from the QA weekend in Essen, Germany. The meeting took place at the "Linux Hotel" - Villa Vogelsang and it was coordinated by a team from the "OpenOffice.org Deutschland e.V.". There were about 18 participants from Germany, Swizerland, the Netherlands and from Mongolia.

Most people came on Friday afternoon and in the evening we had a barbecue and we had a lot of fun... On Saturday morning Jacqueline Rahemipour and André Schnabel started with a tract about the current translation process and how it is seen by the German community.
Then Stefan Baltzer and I talked about the mission and dependencies of QA work within the project. Topics like "compliance of deadlines" and how it relates to QA work or if checks of already integrated issue fixes having the state "verified/fixed" help to identify potential problems of the integration process of child workspaces were discussed. Then we talked about creating synergies between the QA teams of OpenOffice.org native language teams. We discussed that it might be relevant that contact persons of different native language QA teams are published on the QA web page to be able to ask for advice.
After a lunch break Cor Nouws from the Dutch native language team informed us how QA work in the Netherlands is coordinated and he talked about other activities in the Netherlands like an "OpenOffice.org Café" that will be started as an event in a town near the Belgian border in June 2008. Then Badral Sanligiin representing the Mongolian community talked about his work on translating OpenOffice.org into the Mongolian language. It was very interesting to learn about this project. He said that UI translation is about 90% complete and he will commit it back to the OpenOffice.org code base in June/July this year as well as he commited patches that are needed for the input method needed for the traditional mongolian written language as it uses complex text layout that is different from the Cyrillic alphabet that is commonly used nowerdays. In the evening there was some kind of bug hunting party with a focus on the current developer snapshot BEA300_m2. It was a late night.

On Sunday Helge Delfs demoed his (still local) version of the QA status page called "QUASTE". Using this web application it will be possible to upload testtool results to a server to get immediate feedback about how this test results eg. of a CWS build relate to the master workspace where this CWS has been created on. Afterwards we talked about QA work on child workspaces and how someone can get information from the EIS webapplication. After a brainstorming session about spoilsport for community members and how to address these problems at the end of this weekend we talked about how to do some advertisement for QA application related sub projects.

All in all it was a really productive meeting and it was really good to have members of other native language projects who shared their knowledge with the other attendees. Special thanks go to Jacqueline who mostly planned this event.

To NCC, Thea speaking on the assurance of salvation. Back for lunch; applied slugging for much of the afternoon - in the sun in the garden. Got the paddling pool out and inflated it (via. some parental hyper-ventilation).
Finished The Midnight Folk good fun. Considered the evils of re-building half of the house down while living in the other half - pwrt. it's effect on network connectivity: searched the house for suitable places for new conduit to re-route phone & network: [ you can never have enough handy conduits ]. J. found a great location after a number of less fortunate suggestions.

Creates a Calc document with information from and hyperlinks leading to selected OOo documents.
Choose a file, if OOo document's file property information can be read ...it is listed.
(only OOo file formats by now - no MS file types or others processed)

All selected documents are scanned (all in selected sub directories) and their OpenOffice.org File>Properties information are collected to a Calc document.

odt2pml exports a Writer document into a "Palm Markup Language" (PML) tagged plain text file, ready to be processed by DropBook for Palm eReader.
odt2pml is WYSIWYG, within PML limitations: format your document as you like, and Palm eReader will show it with nearly the same formatting. That includes character and paragraph styles, page breaks, chapter headings, footnotes, images and direct formatting (bold, italic, ...). Tables, columns and text frames are not supported.
You may enable direct calling of DropBook in order to get a .pdb file ready to be synced to your handheld.
Two helper macros are included: John Vigor's Ascii Formatter, and a chapter heading style formatter.
Version 3.2 includes localizations: English, French, German, Italian, Spanish.
Macros tested with OOo 2.3 and 2.4, on Kubuntu Hardy and Windows XP.
